Erinnerungen an die Menschheit
A world of GŁnter Brus
The stage sets for Gerhard Roth's "Erinnerungen an die Menschheit" ("Memories of Humanity") in the Graz Schauspielhaus, designed by the internationally known Graz artist GŁnter Brus within the scope of the steirischer herbst festival in 1985, were the focal point of a large exhibition.
The play - a sequence of 28 scenes - is a composition of signs and images, which can only be understood through its poetic logic. Brus’ stage set turns the image-laden metaphorical form of presentation into an impressive synthesis of poetry and painting. His works are a fire of ideas against the associative lethargy of accustomed approaches. They surpass the mere reflection of visual reality and create a cosmos - a "Brus world" in its own right - which opposes the functional-rational constriction of human existence. The atmospheric presentation in the Dom im Berg in Graz at the beginning of the year was an intentional thematic prelude to the topic of memories while at the same time it focussed on one of the most important Austrian artists.
